Hypothetical values, not a forecast or guaranteed return. Results include the selected costs and exclude taxes. No investments are recommended. Actual returns vary and losses are possible.
How this calculation works
For each month, the prior balance is multiplied by [(1 + annual return) × (1 − annual cost rate)]^(1/12), then the fixed monthly contribution is added at month end. Both scenarios use the same starting balance, time horizon, return, fees and inflation. Contributions are held flat in dollars and do not stop or increase over the horizon.
Net illustrative growth = ending value − starting amount − cumulative new contributions. It can be negative. Today’s purchasing power = ending value ÷ (1 + inflation)^years. The chart and contribution totals use nominal dollars.
Taxes, contribution limits, withdrawals, transaction charges beyond the selected total cost rate, and market volatility are excluded. This is not an IRA contribution-limit tool. Smooth assumed returns do not reflect an actual investment path. No securities, portfolios or strategies are selected. Results change when inputs or model versions change.
