    How this calculation works

Month one uses your starting monthly amounts. Spending and all non-portfolio income then grow at their respective selected annual rates, compounded monthly. All income starts immediately and continues throughout the horizon. Monthly after-tax gap = max(spending − other income, 0). Gross portfolio withdrawal = gap ÷ (1 − effective withdrawal tax rate).

Monthly growth factor = [(1 + annual return) × (1 − annual cost rate)]^(1/12). Growth and costs apply before an end-of-month withdrawal. Surplus income is not reinvested. Unfunded spending is tracked after the balance reaches zero; balances cannot go negative.

The lower-return case subtracts 2 percentage points from your annual return every year. The early-loss case substitutes a −20% return for year one, spread evenly over its 12 months, then resumes your selected return. Costs and withdrawals still apply. These are selected illustrations, not probabilities or a worst case. No securities, strategies or UAA portfolios are selected or modeled.

Balances are nominal dollars. This simplified model omits tax brackets, account-specific withdrawal ordering, RMD rules, changing benefit start dates, survivor changes and unplanned expenses. Inflation is not a guarantee of future spending changes. Results change with inputs and model versions; identical inputs produce identical results.
